At first glance the GTD gives nothing away to the GTI in terms of looks. It gets the new Mk6 GTI bumper and rear lights, plus a dual tailpipe at the rear. The only way to tell them apart is the badge.
Background
Originally designed as a replacement for the Karmann Ghia, the first Scirocco was available with engines as small as 1.3 litres and power outputs as low as 60bhp.
The second-generation Scirocco made its debut in 1982, the availability of 1.8-litre, 16-valve engines doing wonders for its performance, and survived until 1992. VW announced that the current car would be built back in 2006 and showed the IROC concept car as a strong indication of its design cues.

The Volkswagen Scirocco is a sports coupe manufactured by German manufacturer Volkswagen (VW) through two generations from 1974 until 1992 and reintroduced in a third generation in August, 2008.
The nameplate Scirocco derives from the Italian word for the Sirocco wind — and the period in its history when Volkswagen named vehicles after prominent winds, including also Passat (after the German word for Trade wind), Golf (after Gulf Stream), Bora (after Bora) and Jetta (after Jet stream).
